Client background
A.P. Møller Holding (APMH) is the holding company for several large Danish corporations like Mærsk Line and Mærsk Drilling. With decades of experience in drilling operations, APMH has started investing in geothermal energy as a link in the heating sector's green transformation.
Client challenges
The geothermal heating industry is a relatively nascent industry with which the public is unfamiliar. Therefore, debates about Danish climate efforts do not yet reflect the full potential of geothermal energy regarding the economy's green transition. APMH wishes to introduce the industry into the conversation about green infrastructure and establish a regulatory framework around it.
Our approach and findings
In our efforts to help APMH establish a framework around the geothermal heating industry, we performed the following tasks:
- Establishing a model for the economic evaluation of investments in geothermal powerplants
- Evaluating the economic footprint of a geothermal heating facility near Aarhus worth 1.4 billion DKK. with an energy output of 111 MW
- Estimating the effects on job and value creation of the geothermal heating industry in Denmark
- Estimating tax revenue from the geothermal heating industry in Denmark
- Creating presentation material for the industry aimed at political decision-makers
Benefits achieved for our client
Our analysis helped APMH put the geothermal heating industry on the political map in discussions about potential climate solutions to help Denmark meet its 70% emission reduction goals for 2030.
